Why cant I buy a domain name that is expired?

Im trying to buy a domain name using godaddy.com. I look it up and it says taken. I run a whois query on it and it says it expired 2 months ago. Whats up with this? How can I find out when its really expired and available?

Big thanks in advance.

Once a domain name expires, it is often not registrable by the general public for 65-80 after its expiry date, as it moves through the registrar-hold, redemption period, and pending delete domain name statuses.

Here's more detailed info on the domain name expiration & deletion process:

If you're hoping to snap up the domain the second it becomes available, here's an article on how to successfully register an expiring domain:

try at a different registrar like http://www.LocoDomains.com
