When a dot com expires, can you get that domain the next day?

It usually takes about 45 days after the domain has expired that someone new can register it.

The person who had it registered before gets about 5 days to renew it (although their pages stop working the day it expires).

After that, it goes into a registrar hold for 30 days. During this time, the registrar (like GoDaddy) makes the decision on whether or not the person who owned it can renew it. Usually they charge quite a bit of money for this.

After this it goes into a Pending Delete status for about 5 days. Once this is over, people can try and buy it.

It's best to use a backorder service if you really want a domain. pool.com and GoDaddy.com both have them, the rules are a little different.

It depends, but I think you have to "bid" on it & if nobody else is interested in the domain then you can have it after a few days. Contact the host of the website.

Not always.. many companies hold it for a little while to see if the user wants to renew it. I think godaddy lets you set it up so that it purchases it for you as soon as it is available.

No. The amount of time before it will be available for registration depends on the domain's registrar.

Some registrars pre-release domains that expire, where they sell them to the highest bidder through an open auction. The amount of time between the expiration date, and the auction varies.

Some registrars follow the standard domain deletion cycle. If they do, the domain will become available for registration within 65-80 days of the expiry.

See below for a couple good articles about this:
