Can I move hosting and maintain my domain name ?

Okay, I'm really not a techi or anything of the sort.

So I'm going to sound rather stupid ...

erm, last nov I really didn't know better and bought a hosting plan from yahoo which included a .com address... now the bills are really expensive and I was thinking of moving my host to godaddy.com but my domain name hasn't expired until the end november of this year .... So I thought, to save money, I could just pay the $9.99/year to have yahoo keep the domain name and host thru godaddy (who's month hosting is $3.99 compared to yahoo's $6.99).... is this possible ? or will the link get screwed up or something ? How should I go about doing this ?

Should I just wait it out till november ? and start from scratch? I mean my domain name won't expire till november and I really need "that" particular name ....

What you are requesting is known as a transfer. Call GoDaddy and one of their specialists can give you the step by step instructions to do this. You can also search GoDaddy's FAQ's and find the info you need.

Do yourself a favor and do not cancel your Yahoo hosting account until AFTER your website is moved and being hosted by GoDaddy.

Have Fun!!!

Sure you can! Just go to your domain control panel and change the web site url.

yes u can have domain name from 1 service provider and host from another.

If you are not comfortable doing this by urself...aaskany of ur geek friend to do it....

or visit how stuff works..

Yes, Sure, You can do it.

You can find solution at http://www.urlstate.com

you need to just change the nameserver

currently if your nameserver looks like ns1.webhosting1.com

you just have to update it by ns1.webhosting2.com

You can leave the domain at yahoo by going and changing the DNS in your domain control panel to point to the new host domain servers. Or it may be simpler to just transfer the domain to the new host. If you want to host at http://www.dakotawebhosting.com they are running a special that you can transfer a domain for $1.99 when you get hosting and I think the hosting is only $4 a month.

Yes you can. Go to the webpage for godaddy or 1and1 or dreamhost (all good and not very expensive) and poke around. They all allow you to transfer a domain (heck, they want your business!). The only problem may be that yahoo might have "locked" your domain, supposedly so a bad guy couldn't hijack it. If they did, you have to follow their directions to unlock it.
